Should I heat my house with propane gas? Now have oil. Need new burner heating system. Best option?
at
Keep oil? Change system? No natural gas in development. Options are oil, propane or electric heat. Contractor recommends propane but I’m unfamiliar. Which best?

Well your contractor is correct,
I have been in the field for 20yrs plus,
With the options you have propane would be the best bar far, The electric will cost you a good amount of money and it does not heat the house up as quick as a forced air system like the propane, also If you ever get NG to the house you can convert the propane system to Nat-Gas if you wanted to.
Also I dont know how much you keep up with the world and stuff But electric is going up everywhere and in the years to come we are trying to find new ways to move people around the USA without so much oil from other countrys and Electric is what everyonr is going towards so in the long run you are far better off with the propane,
Goodluck
I heat with all electric , the way things are going that seems to be the cheapest way to go
I use base board heat but soon hope to upgrade to an electic whole house furance
Let’s do the math:
1 gallon of oil has 120,000 BTU’s in it.
1 lbs of propane has 80,000 BTU’s in it.
Who gets the money when you switch to propane? The propane guy.
Stick with oil, you can even switch to B5 or B20 and use some renewable biodiesel.
Oil is hands down nicer than propane.
Oil also doesn’t explode like propane.
have been using propane to heat my home for nine years, it is more expensive than oil but cleaner, the heat does not last as long as oil.
If it was not so expensive I would switch to electric
I KNOW THAT PROPANE IS VERY EXPENSIVE IN SOME AREAS ($2 GAL), SO CHECK THAT OUT. COMPARE COST OF GAS VS. OIL AND INSTALLATION OF GAS SYSTEM VS. NEW BURNER
OK Renn-boy, DO the math…
A gallon weighs 7-8 lbs so the comparison with 1 lb of propane is highly skewed…
so conservativly, 7 x 80K =
560K BTU for propane
vs
120K BTU for oil
The gasses burn MUCH cleaner than oil
