Our natural gas bill went up from $25 last summer to $273 the last couple of months. The natural gas is used?
at
for only a week each month in a first floor room that is 25×20, and to heat water in two bathrooms used by three people. We live on the east coast. We never had natural gas before we moved here. Does this sound reasonable, or is something wrong with the system?
Docksrocks, you are too funny!
How do I check the insulation value?

Check the insulation value and condition of the windows in the room. Heating water is usually cheap…heating a poorly insulated home can be expensive. Did you hear they are gonna be charging 50 cents to pump air into your car tires at the gas service stations everywhere? Thats inflation…hahahaha
Prices of gas are gone up, however you need to do some detective work up and make a plan, where you can save energy and money as well,
With the oil prices going up every day all our expenses are doing likewise. Everything from milk to lumber is seeing the increase and I just recently read that the electricity costs have jumped 70% in one year at least in the Northwest. I am unsure what it is like on the East coast, but I would call your service provider and talk with them. Most companies have an energy efficient program that can tell you common ways to reduce your costs and maintain your household. Our bill went from approximately $80 in the winter to $230. Check to make sure your system is running properly, no leaks or broken lines, etc. And do check with your provider, most of the time they are incredibly helpful in ways to lower your usage and in turn your bill. Good luck!
Common sense dictates that natural gas expenses will be substantially higher during the winter months.
If it is an apartment, I would ask Code Enforcement to check to be sure you aren’t paying part of your neighbor’s expenses due to the way its set up.
Yes, there is a big difference between summer and winter bills., but you can ask the company to give you a comparison to the past year’s worth of bills to see if there is a problem, and ask them to come check it for any leaks or energy efficiency problems.
It sounds about right the price of fuel is out of sight . You might want to talk to the gas co about energy saving methods and a budget plan to spread the cost out over the year
